Photosystems and light harvesting
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Light-harvesting system, reaction centre and photoactivation of chlorophyll.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a photon?
Which reaction centre belongs to photosystem I, and at what wavelength does it absorb best?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a photosystem?
Model answer
A functional unit in the thylakoid membrane made of a cluster of light-harvesting pigment molecules together with a reaction centre and its electron acceptor.
- 2
What is a light-harvesting system?
Model answer
A funnel-shaped array of several hundred accessory pigment molecules arranged so that energy absorbed by any of them is passed inwards to a single reaction centre.
- 3
What is a reaction centre?
Model answer
The particular pair of chlorophyll a molecules in a photosystem from which an excited electron is actually lost to an acceptor.
- 4
Describe how absorbed light energy reaches the reaction centre.
Model answer
A pigment molecule absorbs a photon and its energy is passed from one pigment molecule to the next through the antenna array, concentrating the energy of many photons on one reaction centre.
- 5
What is a photon?
Model answer
A discrete packet of light energy, whose energy is greater the shorter the wavelength of the light.
- 6
What happens at a reaction centre when enough energy arrives?
Model answer
An electron in the chlorophyll a is raised to a higher energy level and leaves the molecule, being captured by an electron acceptor.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Photosynthesis, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
