Sexual Reproduction in Plants
Germination of Vicia faba and the action of gibberellin
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Three conditions required for germination, first visible events when a broad bean seed germinates and role of gibberellin in the germination of a cereal grain.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
State three conditions required for germination.
Why does a germinating seed need water?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define germination.
Model answer
Germination is the resumption of growth by the embryo of a seed, up to the point at which the seedling can feed itself.
- 2
State three conditions required for germination.
Model answer
Water, oxygen and a suitable temperature.
- 3
Why does a germinating seed need water?
Model answer
Water swells the seed and splits the testa, activates the enzymes, allows the stored food to be hydrolysed, and carries the soluble products to the embryo.
- 4
Why does a germinating seed need oxygen?
Model answer
Aerobic respiration of the mobilised food reserves releases the ATP needed for growth.
- 5
Why does temperature affect the rate of germination?
Model answer
Germination depends on enzymes, so the rate rises with temperature up to an optimum and then falls as the enzymes are denatured.
- 6
Through which structure does water first enter a broad bean seed?
Model answer
Water enters through the micropyle.
