Adaptations for Transport
The cardiac cycle and its control
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Three stages of the cardiac cycle and myogenic stimulation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What happens during atrial systole?
What happens during ventricular systole?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three stages of the cardiac cycle.
Model answer
Atrial systole, ventricular systole and diastole.
- 2
What happens during atrial systole?
Model answer
The atria contract and force the remaining blood through the open atrioventricular valves into the ventricles.
- 3
What happens during ventricular systole?
Model answer
The ventricles contract, the atrioventricular valves close, pressure rises until the semilunar valves open, and blood is forced into the arteries.
- 4
What happens during diastole?
Model answer
All the chambers relax, the semilunar valves close, and blood flows into the atria and passively into the ventricles.
- 5
What makes a valve open or close?
Model answer
The difference in pressure on its two sides, so it opens when the pressure behind it is higher and closes when the pressure in front is higher.
- 6
On a pressure graph, what does the point where the ventricle curve crosses the atrial curve show?
Model answer
The atrioventricular valve closing as ventricular pressure rises above atrial pressure.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Adaptations for Transport, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
