The species concept and the binomial system
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Term species, ring species and morphological species concept.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is the usual definition of a species hard to apply to bacteria?
Why is the usual definition of a species hard to apply to organisms known only as fossils?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the term species.
Model answer
A species is a group of organisms with similar features that can interbreed to produce fertile offspring and that are reproductively isolated from other such groups.
- 2
Why is a mule not regarded as a species?
Model answer
A mule is the offspring of a horse and a donkey and is sterile, so the two parents remain separate species.
- 3
Why is the usual definition of a species hard to apply to bacteria?
Model answer
Bacteria reproduce asexually, so the test of interbreeding to give fertile offspring cannot be applied to them.
- 4
Why is the usual definition hard to apply to organisms known only as fossils?
Model answer
Extinct organisms cannot be bred, so only their preserved structures are available for comparison.
- 5
What is a ring species?
Model answer
A ring species is a chain of neighbouring populations around a barrier in which each can breed with the next, but the two populations at the ends of the chain cannot breed where they meet.
- 6
What is the morphological species concept?
Model answer
Organisms are treated as one species if they are sufficiently alike in structure and appearance.
