The cell cycle and interphase
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Three main phases of the cell cycle, three stages of interphase in order and term chromatid.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the three main phases of the cell cycle.
Name the three stages of interphase in order.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the three main phases of the cell cycle.
Model answer
Interphase, nuclear division and cytokinesis.
- 2
Name the three stages of interphase in order.
Model answer
G₁, S and G₂.
- 3
What happens during the S phase of interphase?
Model answer
The DNA is replicated semi-conservatively, so that every chromosome comes to consist of two identical chromatids.
- 4
What happens during the G₁ phase of interphase?
Model answer
The cell grows, new organelles and proteins are made, and the enzymes needed for DNA replication are produced.
- 5
What happens during the G₂ phase, after the DNA has been replicated?
Model answer
The cell continues to grow, the replicated DNA is checked for errors, and the proteins needed for division such as tubulin are made.
- 6
Why is it wrong to call interphase a resting phase?
Model answer
The cell is at its most metabolically active during interphase, replicating DNA, synthesising protein and respiring rapidly.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Mitosis and Meiosis, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
