The structure of the human brain
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Cerebral cortex, corpus callosum and appearance of the cerebellum.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is the cerebral cortex?
Why is the surface of the cerebrum so deeply folded?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which is the largest region of the human brain, and where does it lie?
Model answer
The cerebrum is the largest region, and it lies above and in front of the rest of the brain, filling most of the upper part of the skull.
- 2
Into what two parts is the cerebrum divided?
Model answer
The cerebrum is divided into a left and a right cerebral hemisphere.
- 3
What is the cerebral cortex?
Model answer
The cerebral cortex is the thin outer layer of grey matter that covers the cerebral hemispheres.
- 4
Why is the surface of the cerebrum so deeply folded?
Model answer
Folding greatly increases the area of cortex that can be fitted inside the skull, so far more neurones and synapses can be packed in.
- 5
What is the corpus callosum?
Model answer
The corpus callosum is the broad band of nerve fibres connecting the two cerebral hemispheres, allowing information to pass between them.
- 6
Describe the difference between the grey matter and the white matter of the cerebrum.
Model answer
The grey matter of the cortex is made of cell bodies, dendrites and synapses, while the white matter beneath it is made of myelinated axons carrying impulses between regions.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Neurobiology and Behaviour: The Brain, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
