The vertebral column and its vertebrae
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Centrum of a vertebra, function of the neural spine and the transverse processes and purpose of the articulating facets on a vertebra.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What passes through the neural canal of a vertebra?
Give two features of a cervical vertebra and relate each to its function.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How many vertebrae lie in each region of the vertebral column?
Model answer
There are seven cervical vertebrae, twelve thoracic, five lumbar, five fused to form the sacrum and four fused to form the coccyx.
- 2
Give four functions of the vertebral column.
Model answer
The vertebral column supports the head and trunk, encloses and protects the spinal cord, provides attachment for the ribs and the muscles of the back, and transmits the weight of the upper body to the pelvic girdle.
- 3
What is the centrum of a vertebra, and what does it do?
Model answer
The centrum is the solid cylinder of bone forming the front of a vertebra, and it takes the compressive load passed down the column from the vertebra above.
- 4
What passes through the neural canal of a vertebra?
Model answer
The spinal cord passes through the neural canal, which is enclosed by the bony neural arch.
- 5
What is the function of the neural spine and the transverse processes?
Model answer
They project outwards from the vertebra to give muscles and ligaments large surfaces to attach to and long lever arms to pull on.
- 6
What is the purpose of the articulating facets on a vertebra?
Model answer
The facets meet matching surfaces on the vertebrae above and below and interlock with them, so they guide the direction of movement and limit how far one vertebra can move on the next, protecting the spinal cord.
