Biological Molecules
Polysaccharides, storage and structure
- 3 things to know
- Component 1
Overview
Term polysaccharide, structure of amylose and structure of cellulose.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define the term polysaccharide.
Which two polymers make up starch?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does the structure of α-glucose differ from that of β-glucose?
Model answer
The hydroxyl group on carbon 1 lies below the ring in α-glucose and above the ring in β-glucose, while the two have identical molecular formulae.
- 2
Define the term polysaccharide.
Model answer
A polymer built from many monosaccharide units joined by glycosidic bonds in a series of condensation reactions.
- 3
Which two polymers make up starch?
Model answer
Amylose and amylopectin.
- 4
Describe the structure of amylose.
Model answer
It is an unbranched chain of α-glucose joined by 1,4 glycosidic bonds, which coils into a compact helix held by hydrogen bonds.
- 5
How does amylopectin differ from amylose?
Model answer
Amylopectin carries 1,6 glycosidic bonds as well as 1,4 bonds, so the chain is branched rather than a simple helix.
- 6
Give three properties that make starch a good storage molecule in a plant cell.
Model answer
It is insoluble so it has no osmotic effect, it is compact so a large mass fits in a small space, and it is readily hydrolysed back to glucose when needed.
