Homeostasis and the Kidney
Excretory products, adaptation and kidney failure
- 3 things to know
- Component 3
Overview
Three nitrogenous excretory products found in animals, two causes of kidney failure and three consequences of kidney failure.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Name the three nitrogenous excretory products found in animals.
Which animals excrete uric acid, and what is its advantage?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is excretion?
Model answer
The removal from the body of the waste products of metabolism.
- 2
Why is nitrogenous waste produced?
Model answer
Excess amino acids cannot be stored, so they are deaminated in the liver and the amino group is converted into a nitrogenous compound for excretion.
- 3
Name the three nitrogenous excretory products found in animals.
Model answer
Ammonia, urea and uric acid.
- 4
Which animals excrete ammonia, and why can they afford to?
Model answer
Freshwater fish and other aquatic animals, because ammonia is very toxic but very soluble and can be diluted away immediately in the surrounding water.
- 5
Why do mammals excrete urea rather than ammonia?
Model answer
Urea is far less toxic, so it can be carried in the blood and stored in the bladder, and it needs much less water to excrete.
- 6
Which animals excrete uric acid, and what is its advantage?
Model answer
Birds, insects and reptiles, because uric acid is almost insoluble and can be excreted as a paste with almost no water loss.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Homeostasis and the Kidney, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
