Application of Research Methods to Novel Scenarios (A2): judging the reliability, validity and ethics
- 2 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on judging the reliability, validity and ethics.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Two studies of the same behaviour, one longitudinal and one cross-sectional, disagree. What is the most likely source of the disagreement?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
An unseen study reports a mean of 42 with a standard deviation of 19 in one condition and a mean of 45 with a standard deviation of 3 in the other. What does this tell you?
Model answer
The two means are close, but performance in the first condition was far more variable, so comparing the averages alone would hide large individual differences within that group.
- 2
A report quotes the mean of a set of salaries as the typical figure. Why should this be questioned?
Model answer
Because salary data are normally positively skewed by a few very high earners, which drags the mean above the bulk of the scores, so the median would describe the typical case far better.
- 3
A questionnaire study reports that 45 of its 60 participants agreed with a statement. Express this as a percentage.
Model answer
75% of the participants agreed with the statement.
- 4
A researcher plans to give the same self-esteem measure to the same people six months apart. What are they assessing, and what could confound it?
Model answer
They are assessing test-retest reliability, but genuine change in participants' self-esteem over six months could depress the correlation even though the measure itself is sound.
- 5
A new online screening tool is validated by correlating it with an established clinical interview given in the same week. Name the type of validity, and its limitation here.
Model answer
This is concurrent validity, and its limitation is that the tool can never be shown to be better than the interview it is judged against, so any weakness in the interview is inherited.
- 6
A study on obedience deceives participants about its true purpose. What must the researcher then do, and under which code?
Model answer
They must debrief participants fully afterwards, return them to the state they were in beforehand and offer them the right to withdraw their data, in line with the British Psychological Society's Code of Ethics and Conduct (2009).

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Applied Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
