Autistic Spectrum Behaviours: methods of modifying the behaviour and evaluating those methods
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on methods of modifying the behaviour and evaluating those methods.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Outline the six phases of PECS.
How does an RDI parent act as a guide, what is the weakness of RDI's evidence base, and what ethical objection is made to such programmes?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is PECS and what learning principle does it use?
Model answer
The Picture Exchange Communication System, developed by Bondy and Frost, teaches functional communication by having the learner hand over a picture of a desired item; the item itself is the reinforcer, so it works on operant principles.
- 2
Outline the six phases of PECS.
Model answer
Phase I is physically exchanging a single picture for a wanted item; II adds persistence and distance; III adds discrimination between pictures; IV builds the sentence "I want" on a sentence strip; V is answering "What do you want?"; VI is commenting on the environment.
- 3
What did Howlin et al. (2007) find in their controlled evaluation of PECS?
Model answer
Rates of initiating communication and using PECS rose in the trained schools, but the gains were not maintained once training support ended and there was no significant improvement in spoken language.
- 4
What is Relationship Development Intervention aiming to develop?
Model answer
Gutstein's programme targets dynamic intelligence: flexible thinking, emotion sharing, experience sharing with others and the ability to cope with change and uncertainty.
- 5
How does an RDI parent act as a guide?
Model answer
Parents are trained to slow interactions down, use declarative rather than imperative language, and frame activities containing manageable amounts of uncertainty so the child practises adapting.
- 6
What is the main weakness of the evidence base for RDI?
Model answer
The main supporting study was uncontrolled and conducted by the programme's own developer, and there is very little independent replication.
