Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the controversy over psychology's scientific status actually about?
Model answer
It is about whether the study of human behaviour and experience can and should be conducted by the methods of the natural sciences, and whether psychology currently meets those standards.
- 2
Name five features usually held to define a science.
Model answer
Empirical evidence gathered by observation, objectivity, control of variables so that cause can be inferred, replicability, and theories that make falsifiable predictions.
- 3
What is falsifiability?
Model answer
Falsifiability is the requirement, set out by Popper (1959), that a theory must make predictions that could in principle be shown to be wrong by evidence.
- 4
Why did Popper regard psychoanalytic theory as unscientific, and how does repression illustrate his point?
Model answer
He argued that its explanations can accommodate any outcome after the event, so no observation counts against them: if a person recalls a traumatic event the memory is said not to have been repressed, and if they do not recall it that is taken as proof that it was.
- 5
How does the use of a null hypothesis show psychology attempting to be scientific?
Model answer
Stating a null hypothesis and testing whether the data allow it to be rejected builds a possible refutation into the design, which is exactly what falsifiability demands.
- 6
What is a paradigm?
Model answer
Kuhn (1962) used the term for the set of shared assumptions, methods and accepted problems within which the members of a scientific discipline work.
