Psychology Past to Present — The Five Approaches
Classic Evidence (Biological): Raine, Buchsbaum and LaCasse (1997) — conclusions
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Raine, Buchsbaum and LaCasse — conclusions.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How was abnormal amygdala and limbic activity interpreted?
Why might a poorly functioning corpus callosum contribute to violence?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What did the researchers do about handedness, ethnicity and head injury?
Model answer
They re-ran the analyses with left-handed participants, participants from ethnic minorities and those with a history of head injury removed, and the main prefrontal finding still held.
- 2
How was reduced prefrontal activity interpreted?
Model answer
As a loss of the regulation the prefrontal cortex normally provides, producing impulsivity, poor self-control and a reduced ability to adjust behaviour in the light of consequences.
- 3
How was abnormal amygdala and limbic activity interpreted?
Model answer
As weakened fear conditioning and blunted emotional response, so aggression is less inhibited by learned fear of punishment.
- 4
Why might a poorly functioning corpus callosum contribute to violence?
Model answer
Weaker communication between the hemispheres would leave negative emotion generated in the right hemisphere less regulated by the left hemisphere.
- 5
State three limits the researchers themselves placed on their conclusions.
Model answer
They stressed that the findings do not show violence is caused by biology alone, do not show that murderers are not responsible for their actions, and apply only to this group of murderers pleading not guilty by reason of insanity rather than to violent offenders in general.
- 6
Identify an ethical issue arising from the consent given by the murderers.
Model answer
Many had serious psychiatric conditions or brain injury that could impair their capacity to understand the study, and as defendants awaiting trial they may have felt that taking part would help their case.
