Schizophrenia: social psychological explanations and evaluating those methods
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on social psychological explanations and evaluating those methods.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are two ethical issues in treating schizophrenia?
Explain how the biological and social explanations lead to different treatments.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is the schizophrenogenic mother theory rejected today?
Model answer
It was built on retrospective clinical impressions from a small number of patients, was never supported by controlled evidence, was framed so that any maternal behaviour could confirm it, and is contradicted by strong genetic and neurobiological findings.
- 2
What harm did the schizophrenogenic mother theory cause?
Model answer
It blamed mothers for their children's illness, causing lasting guilt and stigma, and it justified excluding families from treatment at the point they most needed support.
- 3
Describe the sex differences reported in schizophrenia and one explanation offered for them.
Model answer
Men tend to be diagnosed earlier and women later, often with better premorbid functioning and a second peak of onset in middle age; the oestrogen protection hypothesis attributes this to a protective effect of oestrogen that is lost after the menopause.
- 4
How do cultural norms affect what is counted as a symptom?
Model answer
Experiences such as hearing the voice of a deceased relative are meaningful and accepted in some cultures but recorded as hallucinations by clinicians who do not share those norms, and the raised diagnosis rate among African-Caribbean people in the UK is attributed largely to clinician bias and to social defeat and discrimination rather than genetics.
- 5
What did Tienari et al. (2004) show about dysfunctional families and schizophrenia?
Model answer
Adoptees whose biological mother had schizophrenia developed the condition far more often when raised in a dysfunctional adoptive family than in a healthy one, showing gene-environment interaction rather than the family causation claimed by earlier ideas such as the double bind.
- 6
What is expressed emotion, and what are its components?
Model answer
Expressed emotion is the emotional climate a relative shows towards the family member, assessed by interview, and it comprises critical comments, hostility and emotional over-involvement.
