Deciding on a Research Question: variables, operationalisation and extraneous variables

  • 3 things to know
  • AS Unit 2

Overview

Independent, dependent and co-variables, operationalising a variable such as playground aggression, the difference between extraneous and confounding variables, and why instructions to participants are standardised.

What you need to know

Answer each one before you reveal it.

Your recallNot started
Study

Define the independent and dependent variables, and identify them in a study of whether caffeine speeds up reaction time.

Study

Define operationalisation and an extraneous variable, and explain why poor operationalisation weakens a study.

Key term

What is the independent variable?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is the independent variable?

    Model answer

The variable the researcher manipulates or selects, whose effect on behaviour is being investigated.

  2. 2

    What is the dependent variable?

    Model answer

The variable that is measured, and which is expected to change as a result of changes in the independent variable.

  3. 3

In a study of whether caffeine speeds up reaction time, identify the independent and dependent variables.

    Model answer

The independent variable is the amount of caffeine given, and the dependent variable is the reaction time measured.

  4. 4

    What are co-variables?

    Model answer

The two variables measured in a correlational study, neither of which is manipulated, so neither is called independent or dependent.

  5. 5

Why is the language of independent and dependent variables avoided in correlational research?

    Model answer

Because nothing is manipulated by the researcher, so there is no basis for saying which variable is acting on the other.

  6. 6

    What is operationalisation?

    Model answer

Defining a variable precisely in terms of how it will be manipulated or measured, so that another researcher could repeat the procedure exactly.
