Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Who founded the psychodynamic approach, and what are its three assumptions?
Model answer
Sigmund Freud; the assumptions are the influence of childhood experiences, the unconscious mind, and the tripartite personality.
- 2
Why does the approach place so much weight on early childhood?
Model answer
Freud argued that personality is essentially formed in the first five years, so conflicts left unresolved then continue to shape adult behaviour.
- 3
List Freud's five psychosexual stages in order.
Model answer
Oral, anal, phallic, latency and genital.
- 4
What is meant by fixation?
Model answer
When a conflict at a psychosexual stage is not resolved, psychic energy stays attached to that stage and its concerns reappear in adult personality.
- 5
What adult traits are said to follow from anal-retentive fixation?
Model answer
Excessive tidiness, stubbornness and a need to control.
- 6
Describe the Oedipus complex.
Model answer
In the phallic stage a boy is said to desire his mother and see his father as a rival, fear punishment for it, and resolve the conflict by identifying with his father.
