Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does it mean to conduct research in a laboratory environment?

    Model answer

It means carrying the study out in a setting the researcher controls and has set up for the purpose, rather than in the place where the behaviour would normally occur.

  2. 2

Why does laboratory research usually have high internal validity?

    Model answer

Extraneous variables can be identified and controlled, so any change in the dependent variable can more safely be attributed to the independent variable.

  3. 3

What is the main criticism made of laboratory research?

    Model answer

Both the setting and the task are artificial, so behaviour may not be what people would do in everyday life, giving the findings low ecological validity.

  4. 4

Why are demand characteristics especially likely in a laboratory?

    Model answer

Participants know they are being studied, so they search the situation for cues about what is expected and adjust their behaviour accordingly.

  5. 5

What is meant by conducting research in the field?

    Model answer

Carrying the study out in the participants' own natural, everyday environment, such as a school, workplace, street or train.

  6. 6

Give the main strength of field research.

    Model answer

Behaviour occurs in its normal setting and is therefore more natural, so the findings are more likely to hold outside the study itself.
