Questions from this subtopic

  1. 1

How do comparative and ethological research differ in the ethical demands they make?

    Model answer

Field-based ethological work usually observes animals without intervening, whereas laboratory comparative work often involves deprivation, confinement or aversive stimulation, so the BPS animal guidelines additionally require field researchers to disturb the animals and their habitat as little as possible.

  2. 2

What did Garcia and Koelling (1966) show, and why does it limit generalisation from animal learning studies?

    Model answer

They showed rats readily associate a taste with later illness but not with electric shock, so learning is constrained by what the species is biologically prepared to learn and the laws found in one species may not transfer.

  3. 3

What is anthropomorphism, and why is it a risk in animal research?

    Model answer

It is attributing human thoughts, motives and feelings to animals, and it risks reading a complex human explanation into behaviour that has a simpler cause.

  4. 4

    What is animal-assisted therapy?

    Model answer

It is the planned use of an animal as part of a treatment or support programme, for example a therapy dog in a care home, an assistance dog, or work with horses in equine-assisted therapy.

  5. 5

What did Allen and colleagues (1991) find about the presence of a pet during a stressful task?

    Model answer

Participants who had their own dog present showed lower cardiovascular reactivity to the stressor than those accompanied by a close friend.

  6. 6

How strong is the evidence for dolphin-assisted therapy?

    Model answer

Marino and Lilienfeld (2007) reviewed the studies and found weaknesses such as inadequate control groups, very short follow-up and possible novelty effects, so claims of therapeutic benefit are not established.
