Methodologies: non-participant observation, content analysis and interviews
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Non-participant observation and its trade-off, content analysis and the data it produces, and the strengths and weaknesses of structured and semi-structured interviews.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is a structured interview or questionnaire?
What is content analysis?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How does a non-participant observation differ, and what is the trade-off?
Model answer
The researcher records behaviour from outside the group without taking part, which is more objective and easier to record accurately, but the insider's understanding of what the behaviour means is lost.
- 2
What is content analysis?
Model answer
A method of studying communication such as newspapers, advertisements, diaries or recorded speech by placing the material into coding categories and counting how often each occurs.
- 3
What kind of data does content analysis produce?
Model answer
It converts qualitative material into quantitative frequency counts, although recurring themes can also be reported qualitatively.
- 4
Give one strength and one weakness of content analysis.
Model answer
The material already exists and can be re-examined, so the analysis can be checked and repeated with few ethical problems, but the categories are chosen by the researcher and the material is interpreted out of its original context.
- 5
What is a structured interview or questionnaire?
Model answer
A self-report in which every respondent is asked the same predetermined questions in the same order, usually with fixed or closed response options.
- 6
Give one strength and one weakness of structured self-report.
Model answer
It is quick to administer and produces answers that are easy to compare and replicate, but there is no scope to follow up an interesting reply so depth of understanding is lost.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
