Assessing Reliability: split-half reliability
- 2 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on split-half reliability.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which of the three methods would you use to check a structured observation, and which to check a personality inventory?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define split-half reliability.
Model answer
It is the extent to which the two halves of a single test produce consistent scores for the same participants.
- 2
Which kind of reliability does the split-half method assess?
Model answer
It assesses internal reliability, whether the items within the test are all measuring the same thing consistently.
- 3
Describe how a split-half check is carried out.
Model answer
Each participant's answers are divided into two halves, commonly the odd-numbered items against the even-numbered ones, each half is scored separately, and the two sets of half-scores are then correlated across the participants.
- 4
Why are odd and even items used for the split rather than the first half against the second half?
Model answer
Because tests often get harder towards the end and participants tire as they go on, so a first-half against second-half split would make the two halves unequal for reasons that have nothing to do with reliability.
- 5
A questionnaire on exam anxiety splits at +0.42. What does this suggest, and what should be done about it?
Model answer
It suggests that the items are not all tapping exam anxiety, so the researcher should identify the items that fail to agree with the rest and either rewrite them or remove them.
- 6
Which of the three methods would you use to check a structured observation, and which to check a personality inventory?
Model answer
Inter-rater reliability suits the structured observation because it depends on human coders making judgements, while test-retest suits the personality inventory because a personality trait ought to remain stable across occasions.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Applied Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
