Psychology Past to Present — The Five Approaches
Behaviourist Therapy: Aversion Therapy or Systematic Desensitisation — how the approach is used
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on counter-conditioning, reciprocal inhibition and anxiety hierarchy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which psychologist developed systematic desensitisation, and when?
On which type of conditioning is aversion therapy based?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which behaviourist assumptions do these therapies put into practice?
Model answer
That behaviour is learnt through conditioning and can therefore be unlearnt, and that the laws of association demonstrated in animals apply equally to people.
- 2
On which type of conditioning is aversion therapy based?
Model answer
Classical conditioning, used to build a new and unpleasant association in place of the existing pleasant one.
- 3
Define counter-conditioning.
Model answer
Replacing an existing learnt response to a stimulus with a new, incompatible response to that same stimulus.
- 4
Outline how aversion therapy is used for alcohol dependence, naming a drug involved.
Model answer
The client takes a nausea-inducing drug such as disulfiram and then drinks alcohol, so the taste, smell and sight of alcohol are repeatedly paired with sickness across sessions until alcohol itself produces nausea.
- 5
Identify the unconditioned stimulus and the conditioned stimulus in that procedure.
Model answer
The nausea-inducing drug is the unconditioned stimulus and the alcohol becomes the conditioned stimulus.
- 6
What is covert sensitisation, and why might it be preferred?
Model answer
The client vividly imagines the unwanted behaviour followed by an aversive consequence rather than actually experiencing it, which causes far less physical distress and avoids drug side effects.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Psychology Past to Present — The Five Approaches, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
