Controversy: Scientific Status — judgements and conclusions
- 1 thing to know
- A2 Unit 3 Section B
Overview
Recall questions on Scientific Status — judgements and conclusions.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Give the argument that quantification itself is a cost.
Model answer
Reducing experience to a score discards the content of what a person thinks and feels, which is why idiographic and qualitative methods are defended as capturing what measurement leaves out.
- 2
Describe the methodology of the biological approach and evaluate its scientific credentials.
Model answer
It uses laboratory experiments, brain scanning as in Raine, Buchsbaum and LaCasse (1997), and twin and adoption studies, giving objective and quantifiable data, though scanning is correlational so a difference in brain activity does not establish that it caused the behaviour.
- 3
Why is the behaviourist approach usually judged the most scientific of the five?
Model answer
Watson (1913) restricted psychology to observable, measurable behaviour and rejected introspection, and the resulting laboratory studies of conditioning are highly controlled and readily replicated.
- 4
How does the cognitive approach study internal processes scientifically, and what is the weakness of doing so?
Model answer
It manipulates an input and measures an output under controlled conditions and infers the process in between, as in Loftus and Palmer (1974) where the verb used in a question altered participants' speed estimates, but the process itself is never observed, so rival models can account for the same data.
- 5
Evaluate the psychodynamic approach's methodology in scientific terms.
Model answer
Case studies, dream analysis and clinical interview give rich detail about individuals, as in Bowlby's (1944) study of young offenders, but they rely on the analyst's interpretation, use small unrepresentative samples and generate claims that resist refutation.
- 6
What methods does the positive approach rely on, and what is the main criticism of them?
Model answer
It relies on self-report questionnaires and surveys, as in Myers and Diener's (1995) review of who reports being happy, and the criticism is that self-reported well-being is open to social desirability and to how the person happens to feel that day.
