Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is the VIA classification?

    Model answer

It is Peterson and Seligman's (2004) catalogue of 24 character strengths grouped under six virtues, built deliberately as a counterpart to the diagnostic manuals of disorder.

  2. 2

What did Seligman et al. (2005) find when they tested happiness exercises?

    Model answer

In a randomised, placebo-controlled internet study, writing down three good things each day and using a signature strength in a new way raised happiness and lowered depressive symptoms for up to six months, while a gratitude visit produced a large but shorter-lived gain.

  3. 3

Describe the main components of Frisch's quality of life therapy.

    Model answer

The client identifies the life areas that matter most to them, then works on the circumstances themselves, their attitude towards them, the standards they are judged against, the importance placed on them, or satisfaction drawn from other areas.

  4. 4

    What is broaden-and-build theory?

    Model answer

It is Fredrickson's proposal that positive emotions widen the range of thought and action available in the moment and, over time, build lasting personal, social and physical resources.

  5. 5

Why is the retraction of the positivity ratio damaging for the field?

    Model answer

Fredrickson and Losada's claim that flourishing begins at a precise ratio of positive to negative emotion was withdrawn once the mathematics behind it was shown to be unfounded, yet it had been taught and applied widely before anyone checked.

  6. 6

How strong are positive psychology interventions overall?

    Model answer

Bolier and colleagues' meta-analysis found small but genuine effects on wellbeing and depression, while a later reanalysis correcting for small-study bias reduced them close to zero, so their effectiveness remains contested.
