Key term

What proportion of scores lies above the mean in a normal distribution, what range covers about 95% of IQ scores, and how does a small standard deviation change the curve?

Key term

Where do the mean, the median and the mode lie in a normal distribution?

Key term

Give two human characteristics that are normally distributed in the population.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What does a distribution curve show?

    Model answer

It shows the shape of a whole set of scores, with the values of the variable along the horizontal axis and the frequency with which each value occurs on the vertical axis.

  2. 2

How does a distribution curve relate to a histogram of the same data?

    Model answer

It is the smooth line obtained by joining the tops of the histogram's bars, so it presents the same information as one continuous shape rather than as separate columns.

  3. 3

Describe the shape of a normal distribution.

    Model answer

It is a symmetrical bell-shaped curve with a single peak at the centre and two tails that fall away equally on either side.

  4. 4

Where do the mean, the median and the mode lie in a normal distribution?

    Model answer

All three fall at the same point, at the centre of the curve directly beneath the peak.

  5. 5

What proportion of the scores lies above the mean in a normal distribution?

    Model answer

Exactly half of the scores lie above the mean, because the curve is symmetrical about it.

  6. 6

What is meant by saying that the tails of a normal curve are asymptotic?

    Model answer

It means the curve draws ever closer to the horizontal axis without ever touching it, because however rare an extreme score may be it always remains possible.
