Questions from this topic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define stress in transactional terms.

    Model answer

Lazarus and Folkman (1984) define stress as arising when a person appraises the demands of a situation as exceeding the resources they have to cope with it.

  2. 2

Name the three stages of Selye's general adaptation syndrome, and say which corresponds to chronic stress.

    Model answer

Alarm, resistance and exhaustion; prolonged chronic stress keeps the body in resistance until resources are depleted and exhaustion, with its associated illness, follows.

  3. 3

Trace the pathway by which adrenaline is released under stress, and give three of its effects.

    Model answer

The hypothalamus activates the sympathetic nervous system, which stimulates the adrenal medulla to release adrenaline and noradrenaline, raising heart rate and blood pressure, dilating the airways and releasing stored glucose.

  4. 4

How does the HPA axis differ from the adrenaline response, and what does it do to immunity?

    Model answer

The HPA axis is slower and sustained, with CRH from the hypothalamus, ACTH from the anterior pituitary and cortisol from the adrenal cortex; prolonged cortisol suppresses immune activity, as Kiecolt-Glaser et al. (1984) showed with reduced natural killer cell activity in students during examinations.

  5. 5

Explain the mismatch argument in the evolutionary account of stress.

    Model answer

Fight or flight evolved for short bursts of physical danger followed by recovery, but modern psychosocial stressors are chronic, so the system stays activated and produces hypertension, immunosuppression and cardiovascular damage.

  6. 6

What alternative to fight or flight did Taylor et al. (2000) propose?

    Model answer

Tend and befriend, a response of protecting offspring and seeking social support linked to oxytocin, which they argued had been overlooked because early stress research used mainly male samples.

Stress revision questions

What does Stress cover in WJEC A-Level Psychology?
2 subtopics: stress: characteristics of the behaviour and individual differences explanations and stress: social psychological explanations and evaluating those methods. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
How is Stress organised?
By the WJEC 601-5719-7 specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.

Every question in Stress, on a schedule.

Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
