Application of Research Methods to a Novel Scenario (AS): identifying the method and the variables
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on identifying the method and the variables.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
When you meet an unfamiliar piece of research, what should you establish first before judging it?
How does the choice of sample limit the conclusions that can be drawn?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
When you meet an unfamiliar piece of research, what should you establish first before judging it?
Model answer
What the researcher set out to find, which variables were involved and how the data were actually collected.
- 2
Why does the researcher's choice of setting change what a study can show?
Model answer
A laboratory offers control, so an effect can be attributed to the independent variable, while a field setting gives more natural behaviour but less control, so the same question produces different kinds of evidence in each.
- 3
How does the choice of sample limit the conclusions that can be drawn?
Model answer
Findings can only be generalised with confidence to people like those studied, so a sample of students says little about the wider population.
- 4
Why does the way the dependent variable is operationalised affect what has really been measured?
Model answer
The chosen measure stands in for the whole concept, so counting playground shoves captures only part of what aggression means and the conclusion must be limited accordingly.
- 5
A study reports that stress and illness are positively correlated. What must not be concluded from it?
Model answer
That stress causes illness, because a correlation shows only that the two vary together and a third variable may be responsible for both.
- 6
Participants rate their mood from 1 to 7 each morning for a week. Which level of measurement is this, and which measure of central tendency should be used?
Model answer
The ratings are ordinal data, so the median is the appropriate measure of central tendency.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Principles of Research and Application of Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
