- 2 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on quasi-experiment, natural experiment and participant observation.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why can a quasi-experiment not establish cause and effect with confidence?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What makes a study an experiment?
Model answer
The researcher manipulates an independent variable, measures a dependent variable and controls other variables, so that a causal conclusion can be drawn.
- 2
Give one strength and one weakness of the experimental method.
Model answer
Its control over variables allows cause and effect to be established, but that same control makes the situation artificial so behaviour may not reflect real life.
- 3
What is a quasi-experiment?
Model answer
A study in which the independent variable is a pre-existing characteristic of the participants, such as age, sex or having a phobia, that the researcher cannot manipulate.
- 4
Why can a quasi-experiment not establish cause and effect with confidence?
Model answer
Participants cannot be randomly allocated to conditions, so differences between the groups themselves may explain the results rather than the independent variable.
- 5
What is a natural experiment?
Model answer
A study in which the independent variable changes of its own accord or is changed by someone other than the researcher, who simply measures the effect on the dependent variable.
- 6
Give one strength and one weakness of natural experiments.
Model answer
They allow the study of variables that could never be manipulated ethically or practically, but the events are rare, cannot be repeated to order and leave extraneous variables uncontrolled.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Principles of Research and Application of Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
