Psychology Past to Present — The Five Approaches
Comparison of the Five Approaches: biological approach and psychodynamic approach
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on biological approach and psychodynamic approach.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does the free will debate matter for how each approach views responsibility for behaviour?
Which approach is regarded as the least scientific and why, and which is the most reductionist?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Where does each of the five approaches stand on the nature-nurture debate?
Model answer
The biological approach is firmly on the nature side and the behaviourist approach firmly on the nurture side with its blank slate assumption, while the psychodynamic, cognitive and positive approaches all take an interactionist position.
- 2
Name the type of determinism associated with the biological, behaviourist and psychodynamic approaches.
Model answer
Biological determinism through genes, brain structure and neurotransmitters; environmental determinism through conditioning; and psychic determinism through unconscious conflicts formed in childhood.
- 3
Which two approaches are furthest apart on the free will debate?
Model answer
The positive approach, which makes free will an explicit assumption, and the biological approach, which explains behaviour as the product of evolution, brain function and neurochemistry.
- 4
Why does the free will debate matter for how each approach views responsibility for behaviour?
Model answer
The more deterministic an approach, the less it holds a person accountable for their behaviour; a biological explanation of violence can be offered as an excuse in court, while the positive approach would insist the person chose how to act.
- 5
Rank the approaches for reductionism, from most to least.
Model answer
The biological approach is the most reductionist, reducing behaviour to genes and neurochemistry, followed by the behaviourist approach reducing it to stimulus and response, then the cognitive approach with its machine reductionism, then the psychodynamic approach, with the positive approach the most holistic.
- 6
Why is the positive approach described as the most holistic of the five?
Model answer
It considers the whole person and their emotions, relationships, values and sense of meaning together, rather than isolating a single mechanism as the cause of behaviour.
