Ethics in Psychological Research: valid consent, working with vulnerable individuals and ways of dealing with ethical issues
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on valid consent, prior general consent, role of an ethics committee and purpose of a debrief.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What extra care is needed when working with vulnerable individuals?
Why is the right to withdraw part of consent rather than a separate matter?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define valid consent.
Model answer
Valid consent is agreement to take part given by someone who has been told enough about the nature, purpose and demands of the study, including their right to withdraw, to make an informed decision.
- 2
What must participants be told before they can give valid consent?
Model answer
What the study involves and what will be asked of them, any risks or discomfort, what will happen to their data, and that they may withdraw at any time.
- 3
What is presumptive consent, and when is it used?
Model answer
A comparable group is told about the procedure and asked whether they would find it acceptable, and if they would, the researcher presumes the real participants would too; it is used where telling the actual participants would ruin the study.
- 4
What is prior general consent?
Model answer
Participants agree in advance to take part in research that may involve deception, without being told which study will deceive them or how.
- 5
Why is the right to withdraw part of consent rather than a separate matter?
Model answer
Consent must be able to be taken back at any point, so a participant who becomes uncomfortable can leave and can also ask for their data to be destroyed.
- 6
Who gives consent when the participants are children under 16?
Model answer
A parent or guardian must consent on their behalf, and the child's own willingness to continue should still be respected throughout.
