Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by a level of measurement?
Model answer
It is the kind of data a variable produces, which determines how much information the scores carry and therefore which statistics and displays can legitimately be used with them.
- 2
Name the four levels of measurement in order of how much information they carry, from least to most.
Model answer
Nominal, ordinal, interval and ratio.
- 3
What kind of data is nominal data?
Model answer
Data placed in named, separate categories, where the researcher records how many cases fall into each category.
- 4
Give an example of nominal data collected in a psychological study.
Model answer
The number of participants answering yes, no or don't know to a question.
- 5
Why can nominal categories not be put into a meaningful order?
Model answer
The categories differ in kind rather than in amount, so no one category represents more of the variable than another.
- 6
Which measure of central tendency is the only one that can be used with nominal data?
Model answer
The mode, because categories can only be counted and the most frequent one identified.
