Participants and Sampling: self-selected sampling and observational sampling techniques
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on self-selected sampling, snowball sampling, event sampling and time sampling.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is snowball sampling?
Give one strength and one weakness of event sampling.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is self-selected sampling?
Model answer
A technique in which participants volunteer themselves in response to an advertisement or a request for help with the research.
- 2
Give one strength and one weakness of self-selected sampling.
Model answer
It is easy to arrange and produces willing, committed participants who have clearly consented, but volunteers tend to be more curious and eager to please, so the sample is biased and demand characteristics are more likely.
- 3
What is snowball sampling?
Model answer
A technique in which participants already recruited put the researcher in touch with further participants from among their own contacts.
- 4
When is snowball sampling used, and what is its main drawback?
Model answer
It is used to reach hidden or hard-to-reach populations, but everyone comes from a single network so the sample is unrepresentative and the researcher loses control over who is recruited.
- 5
What do observational sampling techniques refer to?
Model answer
They refer to how an observer decides which moments or which behaviours to record, rather than to how participants are recruited.
- 6
What is event sampling?
Model answer
Recording every occurrence of a specified behaviour throughout the whole of the observation period.

Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Principles of Research and Application of Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
