Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What did the Western Collaborative Group Study find, and how has the finding been revised?

    Model answer

Rosenman et al. (1975) found that men classified as Type A were more likely to have developed coronary heart disease over an eight and a half year follow-up, but later studies failed to replicate an effect for the whole pattern and hostility is now regarded as the component carrying the risk.

  2. 2

What are daily hassles, and what did Kanner et al. (1981) conclude about them?

    Model answer

They are the minor everyday irritations of ordinary life such as losing things, traffic and having too much to do; Kanner et al. found scores on their hassles scale predicted psychological symptoms better than major life event scores did.

  3. 3

What is the Social Readjustment Rating Scale, and what values did it attach to death of a spouse and to marriage?

    Model answer

Holmes and Rahe's (1967) scale of 43 life events, each given a life change unit value for the readjustment it demands; death of a spouse was rated 100 life change units and marriage 50.

  4. 4

What are two criticisms of the life events approach to stress?

    Model answer

It treats an event as carrying the same weight for everyone regardless of its meaning or desirability, and the data are correlational and retrospective, so recall is shaped by whether the person later became ill.

  5. 5

Distinguish an internal from an external locus of control, and say why internals usually cope better.

    Model answer

Internals believe outcomes follow mainly from their own actions while externals attribute them to luck, fate or powerful others; internals take active, problem-focused steps rather than becoming passive, though this is no advantage when the stressor is genuinely uncontrollable.

  6. 6

What do the biological explanations of stress fail to account for?

    Model answer

They describe the mechanism of the response very well but cannot explain why the same event overwhelms one person and energises another, which requires appraisal and individual differences.
