Personal Investigations: Research Methods Skills — carrying it out ethically and analysing the data
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4
Overview
Recall questions on Research Methods Skills — carrying it out ethically and analysing the data.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Twelve participants recall a mean of 14 words each. State the total number of words recalled by the group.
Which graphical display suits the mean scores of two experimental conditions, and which suits a correlational investigation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Twelve participants recall a mean of 14 words each. State the total number of words recalled by the group.
Model answer
The group recalled 168 words in total.
- 2
Why should a standard deviation be reported alongside a mean?
Model answer
Because the mean says nothing about spread, and the standard deviation shows how tightly the scores cluster around it, which determines how typical of the group that mean really is.
- 3
Which graphical display suits the mean scores of two experimental conditions, and which suits a correlational investigation?
Model answer
A bar chart suits the two condition means because the conditions are discrete categories, and a scatter diagram suits the correlation because it plots each participant's pair of co-variable scores as a single point.
- 4
You have gathered ordinal data from an independent groups experiment. Which inferential test should be applied?
Model answer
The Mann Whitney U test should be applied, because it tests for a difference between two unrelated sets of data measured at ordinal level or above.
- 5
Why must the inferential test be settled at the design stage rather than once the data are in?
Model answer
Because the test depends on whether a difference or a relationship is sought, on whether the data are related or unrelated and on the level of measurement, so the design has to make a suitable test available before any data exist.
- 6
How would you check the reliability of a questionnaire you have written for your own investigation?
Model answer
Divide the items into two halves, such as the odd-numbered and the even-numbered ones, score each half separately for every participant and correlate the two sets of half-scores, or give the whole questionnaire again after a suitable interval and correlate the two totals.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Applied Research Methods, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
