Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a correlational study?

    Model answer

A study that measures two co-variables in the same participants to see whether they vary together, either in the same direction or in opposite directions.

  2. 2

Describe what a negative correlation shows.

    Model answer

As the scores on one co-variable rise, the scores on the other tend to fall.

  3. 3

Why can a correlation never demonstrate cause and effect?

    Model answer

Neither variable is manipulated or controlled, so the relationship could run in either direction or be produced entirely by a third variable acting on both.

  4. 4

    What is a case study?

    Model answer

An in-depth investigation of a single individual, small group, event or institution, usually combining interviews, observations, tests and existing records, often over a long period.

  5. 5

Give one strength and one weakness of the case study.

    Model answer

It provides rich detail about rare cases that could never be produced experimentally and can challenge an accepted theory, but findings from one case may not generalise and often depend on unreliable recall.

  6. 6

    What is a self-report?

    Model answer

Any method in which participants describe their own thoughts, feelings or behaviour, such as questionnaires, interviews, rating scales and diaries.
