Calorimetry and combustion
- 3 things to know
- A2 9
Overview
What calorimetry measures and where it is used, combustion in everyday life, simple, flame and bomb calorimeters, q = mcΔT, comparing alcohols and foods, and why food results fall short.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is calorimetry?
Where is calorimetry used in industry and food science? Give three examples.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is calorimetry?
Model answer
Calorimetry measures the heat energy transferred in a reaction from the temperature change of a known mass of water or solution. The results are used to find the enthalpy change.
- 2
Where is calorimetry used in industry and food science? Give three examples.
Model answer
A food scientist measures the energy content of foods for labels. A fuel chemist compares the energy released by fuels, and a process chemist checks how much heat an industrial reaction gives out.
- 3
Why are combustion reactions important in everyday life?
Model answer
Combustion of fuels heats homes, generates electricity and powers vehicles. Respiration also releases energy from food by a controlled oxidation.
- 4
Describe a simple calorimeter for measuring the energy released by burning a fuel.
Model answer
A spirit burner of fuel heats a known mass of water in a copper can clamped above it. The temperature rise and the mass of fuel burned are measured.
- 5
How does a bomb calorimeter differ from a simple calorimeter?
Model answer
A bomb calorimeter burns the sample completely in pure oxygen inside a sealed steel vessel surrounded by water. Almost no heat is lost, so the result is far more accurate.
- 6
What is a flame calorimeter?
Model answer
A flame calorimeter burns the fuel inside an insulated chamber with a spiral chimney through the water. More of the heat is captured than in a simple copper can.
