Hearing response, phons and equal loudness curves
- 3 things to know
- A2 4
Overview
Finding the most sensitive frequency, ear canal resonance, the audible range, the threshold of hearing curve, phons and equal loudness curves, and how hearing aids use the ear's response.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
At which frequencies is human hearing most sensitive?
Why is hearing most sensitive at 3 to 4 kHz?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe an experiment to find the frequency at which a person's hearing is most sensitive.
Model answer
A signal generator drives headphones at a series of frequencies. At each frequency the intensity is lowered until the tone is just audible. The frequency with the lowest threshold is the most sensitive.
- 2
At which frequencies is human hearing most sensitive?
Model answer
Human hearing is most sensitive between about 3 kHz and 4 kHz. Sounds in this range can be heard at the lowest intensities.
- 3
Why is hearing most sensitive at 3 to 4 kHz?
Model answer
The auditory canal acts like a pipe closed at one end by the eardrum. The canal resonates at 3 to 4 kHz, boosting the pressure of those frequencies at the eardrum.
- 4
An auditory canal is 2.5 cm long. Estimate its resonant frequency, taking the speed of sound as 340 m s⁻¹.
Model answer
The resonant frequency is about 3.4 kHz. The working is λ = 4L = 4 × 0.025 = 0.10 m, and f = 340 ÷ 0.10 = 3400 Hz.
- 5
What range of frequencies can a young person hear?
Model answer
A young person can hear from about 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The upper limit falls with age, a change called presbycusis.
- 6
Why is loudness described as subjective?
Model answer
Loudness is how strong a sound seems to the listener, not a physical measurement. Two sounds of equal intensity at different frequencies can seem very different in loudness.
