Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What are the IUPAC stems for carbon chains of one to six atoms?

    Model answer

The stems are meth-, eth-, prop-, but-, pent- and hex- for one to six carbons. The stem names the longest continuous carbon chain.

  2. 2

How do suffixes show the functional group in an IUPAC name?

    Model answer

The suffix -ane marks an alkane, -ene an alkene and -ol an alcohol. Aldehydes end in -al, ketones in -one and carboxylic acids in -oic acid.

  3. 3

What rules are followed when numbering a carbon chain in an IUPAC name?

    Model answer

The longest chain is numbered from the end that gives the functional group or branch the lowest number. Numbers are separated from words by hyphens and from each other by commas.

  4. 4

    Name CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₃.

    Model answer

CH₃CH(CH₃)CH₂CH₃ is 2-methylbutane. The longest chain has four carbons, with a methyl branch on carbon 2.

  5. 5

Why is 2-ethylbutane an incorrect name?

    Model answer

The longest continuous chain runs through the ethyl group and contains five carbons. The correct name for the compound is 3-methylpentane.

  6. 6

    Name CH₃CH₂CH(OH)CH₃.

    Model answer

CH₃CH₂CH(OH)CH₃ is butan-2-ol. The hydroxyl group is on the second carbon of a four-carbon chain.
