Atomic and microscopic structure of materials
- 3 things to know
- AS 5
Overview
The Bohr model and silicon-28, metallic structure and properties, grains and grain size, crystalline and amorphous materials, polymer structure, thermoplastics and thermosets, and polarising microscopes.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How many electrons can the first and second shells of a Bohr atom hold?
Describe the Bohr model of a silicon-28 atom.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the Bohr model of the atom.
Model answer
The Bohr model has a small central nucleus of protons and neutrons. Electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed shells at increasing distances.
- 2
How many electrons can the first and second shells of a Bohr atom hold?
Model answer
The first shell holds up to 2 electrons. The second shell holds up to 8 electrons.
- 3
Describe the Bohr model of a silicon-28 atom.
Model answer
The nucleus contains 14 protons and 14 neutrons. The 14 electrons are arranged 2, 8, 4 in three shells.
- 4
Describe the microscopic structure of a metal.
Model answer
A metal is a regular lattice of positive ions surrounded by a sea of delocalised electrons. Metallic bonding is the attraction between the ions and the delocalised electrons.
- 5
Explain why metals conduct electricity and heat well.
Model answer
Delocalised electrons are free to move through the lattice and carry charge when a potential difference is applied. The same mobile electrons transfer kinetic energy rapidly, conducting heat.
- 6
Explain why metals are ductile and malleable at the microscopic level.
Model answer
Layers of metal ions can slide over one another when a force is applied. The delocalised electrons keep bonding the ions in their new positions, so the metal does not break.
Other ways to work this

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Material Science, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
