  1. 1

What are the five main categories of materials?

    Model answer

The five categories are metals, ceramics, glasses, polymers and composites. Each category shares a typical set of properties.

  2. 2

What properties do metals typically share?

    Model answer

Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity and are strong, ductile and malleable. Most metals are dense and many corrode.

  3. 3

What is a ceramic, and what are its typical properties?

    Model answer

A ceramic is an inorganic, non-metallic solid usually made by firing at high temperature. Ceramics are hard, brittle, heat resistant and electrically insulating.

  4. 4

What is a glass, and what are its typical properties?

    Model answer

A glass is an amorphous solid, commonly based on silica, that has cooled without crystallising. Glasses are transparent, hard, brittle and chemically resistant.

  5. 5

What properties do polymers typically share?

    Model answer

Polymers have a low density and are good electrical and thermal insulators. Polymers are easily moulded, resist corrosion and soften at fairly low temperatures.

  6. 6

    What is a composite material?

    Model answer

A composite combines two or more distinct materials, a matrix and a reinforcement, that stay separate within it. The composite has properties neither component has alone.
