Reversible reactions, the Haber process and the Contact process
- 3 things to know
- AS 3
Overview
Reversible reactions and dynamic equilibrium, the Haber and Contact processes and their conditions, making sulfuric acid, and predicting the effects of temperature and pressure on yield.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by dynamic equilibrium?
State the equation and enthalpy change for the Haber process.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a reversible reaction?
Model answer
A reversible reaction is one in which the products can react to re-form the reactants. The sign ⇌ shows the reaction goes in both directions.
- 2
What is meant by dynamic equilibrium?
Model answer
Dynamic equilibrium is reached when the forward and reverse reactions occur at equal rates in a closed system. The concentrations of reactants and products then stay constant.
- 3
State the equation and enthalpy change for the Haber process.
Model answer
The equation is N₂(g) + 3H₂(g) ⇌ 2NH₃(g). The forward reaction is exothermic, with ΔH = −92 kJ mol⁻¹.
- 4
State the typical operating conditions of the Haber process.
Model answer
The Haber process runs at about 450 °C and 200 atm with an iron catalyst. Unreacted nitrogen and hydrogen are recycled through the converter.
- 5
How is ammonia separated from the unreacted gases in a Haber plant?
Model answer
The gas mixture is cooled so that ammonia condenses to a liquid. Nitrogen and hydrogen stay as gases and are recycled.
- 6
State the equation and enthalpy change for the key equilibrium in the Contact process.
Model answer
The equation is 2SO₂(g) + O₂(g) ⇌ 2SO₃(g). The forward reaction is exothermic, with ΔH = −197 kJ mol⁻¹.
