Vehicle pollutants, catalytic converters and biofuels
- 3 things to know
- A2 2
Overview
Carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, particulates and unburned hydrocarbons, oil spills, catalytic converters and their limits, and biodiesel and bioethanol against fossil fuels.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Compare biofuels with fossil fuels as sources of energy for transport.
Which pollutants form when alkane fuels burn in engines?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Which pollutants form when alkane fuels burn in engines?
Model answer
Carbon monoxide, oxides of nitrogen and sulfur dioxide are formed. Carbon particulates and unburned hydrocarbons are also released.
- 2
How is carbon monoxide formed in an engine, and why is it harmful?
Model answer
Carbon monoxide forms from incomplete combustion when oxygen is limited. Carbon monoxide binds strongly to haemoglobin, reducing the ability of the blood to carry oxygen.
- 3
How do oxides of nitrogen form in a car engine?
Model answer
The high temperature inside an engine makes nitrogen and oxygen from the air react. The equation N₂ + O₂ → 2NO shows nitrogen monoxide forming, which is then oxidised to NO₂.
- 4
Where does sulfur dioxide from fuels come from, and what problem does it cause?
Model answer
Sulfur dioxide forms when sulfur impurities in the fuel burn. Sulfur dioxide dissolves in rainwater to form acid rain, which damages buildings, lakes and forests.
- 5
Why are carbon particulates from engines harmful?
Model answer
Carbon particulates, or soot, lodge deep in the lungs and worsen asthma and other respiratory diseases. Particulates also blacken buildings and can cause global dimming.
- 6
What problems do unburned hydrocarbons cause?
Model answer
Unburned hydrocarbons react with oxides of nitrogen in sunlight to form photochemical smog. Some unburned hydrocarbons, such as benzene, can cause cancer.
