How does the eye focus on a distant object?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is accommodation?

    Model answer

Accommodation is the eye's ability to change the power of its lens to focus objects at different distances. The image stays sharp on the retina.

  2. 2

How does the eye focus on a distant object?

    Model answer

The ciliary muscles relax and the suspensory ligaments pull tight. The lens is pulled thin and has its lowest power.

  3. 3

How does the eye focus on a near object?

    Model answer

The ciliary muscles contract and the suspensory ligaments slacken. The lens becomes fatter and more powerful, bending light more strongly.

  4. 4

What is the power of a lens, and what is its unit?

    Model answer

The power of a lens is 1 divided by its focal length in metres. Power is measured in dioptres, D, and converging lenses have positive power.

  5. 5

State the lens equation in terms of lens power.

    Model answer

The lens equation is P = 1 ÷ f = 1 ÷ u + 1 ÷ v, with all distances in metres. Real distances are taken as positive and virtual distances as negative.

  6. 6

A converging lens has a focal length of 25 cm. What is its power?

    Model answer

    The power is +4.0 D. The working is P = 1 ÷ 0.25 m = +4.0 D.
