Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What causes the heart sounds heard through a stethoscope?

    Model answer

The first sound, lub, is the atrioventricular valves closing. The second sound, dub, is the semilunar valves closing.

  2. 2

    What is an electrocardiogram?

    Model answer

An electrocardiogram records the electrical activity of the heart through electrodes on the skin. The trace shows the waves of excitation in each heartbeat.

  3. 3

What do the P wave, QRS complex and T wave of an ECG show?

    Model answer

The P wave shows atrial excitation, and the QRS complex shows ventricular excitation. The T wave shows the ventricles recovering.

  4. 4

What does an ECG trace show in tachycardia?

    Model answer

In tachycardia the waves are closer together because the heart beats faster than normal. A resting rate above 100 beats per minute is tachycardia in adults.

  5. 5

What does an ECG trace show in bradycardia?

    Model answer

In bradycardia the waves are further apart because the heart beats slowly. A resting rate below 60 beats per minute is bradycardia, which can be normal in athletes.

  6. 6

What does an ECG trace show in arrhythmia?

    Model answer

In arrhythmia the spacing between beats is irregular. The heart's rhythm is disturbed, for example in atrial fibrillation.
