Key term

How do the mean, median and mode differ?

Key term

The resting pulse rates of six people are 68, 72, 72, 75, 80 and 91 beats per minute. What are the mean, median and mode?

Key term

When is the median a better average than the mean?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How do the mean, median and mode differ?

    Model answer

The mean is the sum of the values divided by the number of values. The median is the middle value of the ordered data, and the mode is the most frequent value.

  2. 2

The resting pulse rates of six people are 68, 72, 72, 75, 80 and 91 beats per minute. What are the mean, median and mode?

    Model answer

The mean is 76.3, the median is 73.5 and the mode is 72 beats per minute. The working for the mean is 458 ÷ 6 = 76.3, and the median is (72 + 75) ÷ 2 = 73.5.

  3. 3

When is the median a better average than the mean?

    Model answer

The median is better when the data are skewed or contain an extreme outlier. One very large value pulls the mean upwards but barely moves the median.

  4. 4

What does the variance of a data set measure?

    Model answer

Variance measures how spread out the values are around the mean. Variance is the mean of the squared deviations from the mean, using n − 1 as the divisor for a sample.

  5. 5

How is standard deviation related to variance?

    Model answer

The standard deviation is the square root of the variance. The standard deviation has the same units as the data, which makes it easier to interpret.

  6. 6

Five repeat readings of a reaction time are 12, 15, 14, 11 and 13 seconds. What is their standard deviation?

    Model answer

    The sample standard deviation is 1.58 s. The mean is 13 s, the squared deviations sum to 10, and √(10 ÷ 4) = 1.58 s.
