Human Body Systems
Body fluids, haemoglobin and the Bohr effect
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
Blood, plasma and tissue fluid, the structure of haemoglobin and the role of iron, partial pressure, loading and unloading oxygen, the dissociation curve, the Bohr effect and carbon dioxide transport.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What are the main body fluids?
What is the composition of blood?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the main body fluids?
Model answer
The main body fluids are blood plasma, tissue fluid and lymph. Fluids are found inside cells and in the spaces around them.
- 2
What is the composition of blood?
Model answer
Blood consists of plasma containing red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Plasma carries dissolved nutrients, hormones, proteins and waste.
- 3
What are the functions of blood plasma?
Model answer
Plasma transports glucose, amino acids, hormones, carbon dioxide and urea. Plasma also carries heat and clotting proteins.
- 4
How is tissue fluid formed?
Model answer
High pressure at the arterial end of a capillary forces plasma out into the tissues. The fluid bathes cells, supplying them and removing waste.
- 5
What is the structure of haemoglobin?
Model answer
Haemoglobin is a protein made of four polypeptide chains, each with a haem group containing an iron ion. Each haem group can bind one oxygen molecule.
- 6
Why is iron essential for oxygen transport?
Model answer
The iron ion in each haem group binds oxygen reversibly. Iron deficiency reduces haemoglobin and causes anaemia.
