Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is the work procedure from a test request to the return of a result?

    Model answer

A clinician requests the test, and a sample is taken and labelled. The laboratory registers, analyses and checks the sample, and the result is returned to the clinician.

  2. 2

Why must a sample be labelled with at least two patient identifiers?

    Model answer

Two identifiers, such as name and date of birth, prevent a sample being matched to the wrong patient. A mismatch could lead to the wrong diagnosis or treatment.

  3. 3

What is a full blood count?

    Model answer

A full blood count measures the red cells, white cells, platelets and haemoglobin in a blood sample. The test helps detect anaemia, infection and blood disorders.

  4. 4

How is a full blood count carried out?

    Model answer

The blood is mixed with an anticoagulant and run through an automated haematology analyser. The analyser counts and sizes thousands of cells as they pass a sensor.

  5. 5

    What is an HbA1c test?

    Model answer

An HbA1c test measures the proportion of haemoglobin with glucose attached. The result reflects average blood glucose over the previous two to three months.

  6. 6

What does a urea and electrolytes test show?

    Model answer

A urea and electrolytes test measures sodium, potassium, urea and creatinine in blood. The results show how well the kidneys are working.
