Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    How is breathing rate measured?

    Model answer

Breathing rate is measured by counting breaths for a set time at rest and converting to breaths per minute. A typical adult rate is about 12 to 20 breaths per minute.

  2. 2

    What is tidal volume?

    Model answer

Tidal volume is the volume of air breathed in or out in one normal breath. Tidal volume is about 0.5 dm³ at rest in adults.

  3. 3

    What is vital capacity?

    Model answer

Vital capacity is the largest volume of air that can be breathed out after the deepest possible breath in. Vital capacity is roughly 4 to 5 dm³ in adult males and lower in females.

  4. 4

How is a spirometer used to measure lung volumes?

    Model answer

A person breathes in and out through a mouthpiece connected to the spirometer, which records volume changes as a trace. Tidal volume and vital capacity are read from the trace.

  5. 5

What is peak expiratory flow rate?

    Model answer

Peak expiratory flow rate is the fastest rate at which a person can breathe out after a full breath in. A peak flow meter measures it in litres per minute.

  6. 6

How is a peak flow meter used?

    Model answer

The person takes a deep breath and blows as hard and fast as possible into the meter. The best of three attempts is recorded.
