Total internal reflection and fibre-optic communication
- 3 things to know
- A2 4
Overview
The conditions for total internal reflection, semi-circular block experiments, critical angle and refractive index calculations, fibre construction, single mode and multimode fibres, and modal dispersion.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What two conditions are needed for total internal reflection?
What is seen in a semi-circular glass block as the angle of incidence passes the critical angle?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What two conditions are needed for total internal reflection?
Model answer
Light must travel from a medium of higher refractive index towards one of lower refractive index. The angle of incidence must be greater than the critical angle.
- 2
What is seen in a semi-circular glass block as the angle of incidence passes the critical angle?
Model answer
Below the critical angle most light refracts out, with a weak reflected ray. Above the critical angle the refracted ray disappears and all the light is reflected back into the block.
- 3
Why does a ray enter the curved face of a semi-circular block without bending?
Model answer
The ray is aimed at the centre of the flat face, so it meets the curved surface along a radius. A ray along a normal meets the surface at 90° and does not refract.
- 4
Glass has a refractive index of 1.50. What is its critical angle in air?
Model answer
The critical angle is about 41.8°. The working is sin C = 1 ÷ 1.50 = 0.667, so C = 41.8°.
- 5
Light travels at 2.0 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ in the core of a glass fibre. What is the refractive index of the core?
Model answer
The refractive index is 1.5. The working is n = c ÷ v = 3.00 × 10⁸ ÷ 2.0 × 10⁸ = 1.5.
- 6
How long does a light pulse take to travel 100 km along a fibre of refractive index 1.5?
Model answer
The pulse takes 5.0 × 10⁻⁴ s, or 0.50 ms. The speed in the fibre is 3.00 × 10⁸ ÷ 1.5 = 2.0 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹. The time is 1.0 × 10⁵ m ÷ 2.0 × 10⁸ m s⁻¹ = 5.0 × 10⁻⁴ s.
