Cellular respiration and ATP
- 3 things to know
- AS 2
Overview
ATP as the energy currency, glycolysis, the link reaction, the Krebs cycle and the electron transport chain, the equation for aerobic respiration, anaerobic respiration in muscle and basal metabolic rate.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is cellular respiration?
What is ATP?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What role does breathing play in cellular respiration?
Model answer
Ventilation of the lungs supplies the oxygen that cells use in aerobic respiration. Ventilation also removes carbon dioxide produced by respiration.
- 2
What is cellular respiration?
Model answer
Cellular respiration is the series of enzyme-controlled reactions that release energy from glucose. The energy is used to make ATP.
- 3
What is ATP?
Model answer
ATP, adenosine triphosphate, is a nucleotide that stores and transfers energy in cells. ATP is made of adenine, ribose and three phosphate groups.
- 4
How does ATP release energy?
Model answer
ATP is hydrolysed to ADP and inorganic phosphate, releasing energy for cell processes. ATP is then remade by respiration.
- 5
Why is ATP a good energy currency?
Model answer
ATP releases energy in small, manageable amounts and is quickly remade. ATP can move easily within the cell.
- 6
What happens in glycolysis?
Model answer
Glycolysis splits one glucose molecule into two pyruvate molecules in the cytoplasm. Glycolysis gives a small net gain of ATP and reduced NAD.
