The gut microbiome in health and disease
- 3 things to know
- A2 6
Overview
The functions of a healthy gut microbiome, dysbiosis and antibiotics, high-throughput and 16S sequencing, culture and metabolomics, inflammatory bowel disease, obesity and bowel cancer, and faecal microbiota transplants.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a healthy gut microbiome do?
What features mark a healthy gut microbiome?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is the gut microbiome?
Model answer
The gut microbiome is the community of trillions of microorganisms, mainly bacteria, living in the digestive tract. Most live in the large intestine.
- 2
What does a healthy gut microbiome do?
Model answer
A healthy microbiome ferments dietary fibre into short-chain fatty acids that nourish the gut lining. The microbiome also makes vitamins and helps keep out pathogens.
- 3
What features mark a healthy gut microbiome?
Model answer
A healthy microbiome is diverse, with many different species in balance. The community is stable and recovers after disturbance.
- 4
What is dysbiosis?
Model answer
Dysbiosis is an imbalance in the gut microbiome, often with lower diversity. Dysbiosis has been linked to a range of diseases.
- 5
How can antibiotics affect the gut microbiome?
Model answer
Antibiotics kill helpful gut bacteria as well as pathogens. Diversity falls, and harmful bacteria such as Clostridioides difficile can take over.
- 6
How does high-throughput sequencing help study the gut microbiome?
Model answer
High-throughput sequencing reads the DNA of all the microbes in a sample at once. Species that cannot be grown in the laboratory can still be identified.
